Larry Summers Steps Down from OpenAI Board
One-time economic leader the Harvard professor is leaving the board at the ChatGPT creator, just a week after a collection of electronic messages between him and deceased financier the accused trafficker became widely known.
The economist commented in an announcement that he was "thankful for the chance to have participated, optimistic about the promise of the enterprise, and eagerly await observing their development".
Summers, who previously led the Ivy League institution, stated on Monday that he would be scaling back from public roles due to his connections with Epstein.
Email Communications
The recently released communications revealed that Summers communicated with the financier until the day before his 2019 arrest for suspected human trafficking of minors.
In a separate statement, the AI firm said it understood his determination to step down.
"We acknowledge his numerous inputs and the perspective he provided to the directors," the organization stated.
Congressional Action
This news comes after both chambers of Congress decided on Tuesday to pass a measure that would compel the Department of Justice to disclose its records on the case.
The legislation will then proceed to the office of the White House for signature. Trump has stated he expects to approve the measure, after modifying his stance on the subject following objections from his followers.

A group of Epstein-related messages made public by the legislative panel days ago mentioned several well-known personalities in the financier's previous network, without implying any illegal behavior by those figures.
The communications indicated that Summers and Jeffrey Epstein dined together frequently, with Epstein often attempting to connect the academic to prominent global figures.
Individual Statement
After the messages were shared with the public, he stated he accepted "total ownership for my poor decision to persist in interacting with Mr Epstein".
He continued that he hoped "to reestablish faith and mend relationships with the people nearest to me".
Previous Positions
Summers held leadership roles under party leaders; functioning as economic leader under the former president, and as director of the White House economic team under Barack Obama.
He headed the institution from 2001 to 2006 and is still a professor there. When announcing his departure from public duties earlier on Monday, he stated he would continue his academic responsibilities.
Other Impacts
Following his statement on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a liberal policy institute in DC where Summers was a researcher, announced that Summers was ceased to be connected with the organization.
The former official became part of the leadership of OpenAI, which develops the language model, in last year - following a failed attempt to replace its CEO OpenAI's head.
